What to learn from the pandemy

“Already too many humans have died because of COVID-19. But sooner or later all 8 billion humans will die if climate change continues at its current pace. (…) Whoever puts himself in the place of God will tear their hair out: you give them a Holy Scripture so that they can live well (Lev 18,5), but they do not follow it. You come to them as a human being and they crucify you (Jesus). What else, says God, can I do to make them see sense? Man is mistreating the earth in a way that can’t come to a good end. But God does not want eight billion people, including the entire planet, to perish as a result of climate change.”

Thomas Hieke, a German theologian specialized in the Old Testament is writing reasonable and convincing things about God, the world and the pandemy. Together with Austrian New Testament specialist Konrad Huber they published a book with the promising title Bibel falsch verstanden (“Misunderstanding the Bible”). Hieke is also a productive blogger

Original text: “Nun sind an COVID-19 schon viel zu viele Menschen verstorben. Aber am ungebremsten Klimawandel werden über kurz oder lang alle acht Milliarden Menschen sterben (nach all den Tier- und Pflanzenarten, die ohnehin schon sterben). Das ist etwas in Vergessenheit geraten, zeigt aber die Dringlichkeit des Problems – oder: der Probleme – an. (..) Wer sich in die Lage Gottes versetzt, wird sich die Haare raufen: Da gibt man den Menschen eine Tora, damit sie gut leben können (Lev 18,5), aber sie befolgen sie nicht. Da kommt man selbst als Mensch zu ihnen, und sie kreuzigen einen (Jesus). Was soll ich, sagt Gott, denn noch alles machen, damit sie zur Vernunft kommen? Jetzt greift der Mensch so auf die Erde zu, dass es nicht mehr gutgehen wird. Gott will aber nicht, dass acht Milliarden Menschen durch den Klimawandel samt dem ganzen Planeten untergehen.”
